FRANCE / 1988 / 97 MIN. / COLOR
Christina Goering and Frieda Copperfield suddenly decide to abandon their suffocating universe. They embark on a trip around the world in search of an impossible sanctity. Two parallel fates for a tragic comedy over a background of painted canvas. In 1988, Pierre Léon completed in two months his debut feature Two Serious Ladies adapted from Jane Bowles’ sole novel of the same name (Tennessee Williams’ favorite, no less): an impossible task, it would seem, given the dense modernist source, total lack of experience, and no budget to speak of. Léon already knew that cinema was capable of mapping and tracing the most incredible journeys with minimum expenditures. An entire world was contained in one room. The cast comprised Léon’s friends and family, as well as a group of filmmakers and colleagues from Libération where he worked back then as a classical music critic. Shot on a Video8 camera — still a novelty at the time — Two Serious Ladies was neither a dream nor a game of filmmaking; rather, it was made with all the solemnity of a “real” film. “Spirit of Fire” will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the debut feature by Pierre Léon, who kindly agreed to serve for the international jury.

The centenary of the October Revolution in Russia is a date that cannot be passed by. It is filled with special energy, no matter how the attitude of society to this very historical event has changed with the course of time. Cinema always spokes on this topic. Movies about the revolution and its results were made not only “for show”. In this project, the October Revolution, its milestones, symbols and consequences are shown through the eyes of today’s young people, newcomers in cinema art. Authors did not get formal and thematic tasks, thus a genre palette of the almanac is the personal choice of each of film directors. The debut animated film of Yuri Norshtein “25th, the First Day” is used to connect the novelties with each other. The film uses images of famous artists of the 20-s of the past century — Vladimir Tatlin, Pavel Filonov, Aristarkh Lentulov, Natan Altman, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin.

FRANCE — JAPAN / 2017 / 103 MIN. / COLOR / 5.1
South of France. Present day. Jean, an actor caught up in the past, learns that his current film shoot is unexpectedly suspended for an indefinite period. He takes this opportunity to visit an old friend and settles, clandestinely, into an abandoned house where it happened that Juliette, the great love of his life, once lived. A group of young friends, novice filmmakers, stumble upon the same house and decide it’s the perfect location for their next home-made horror movie. Jean and the kids will meet face to face, sooner or later. This time Jean-Pierre Léaud, the face of the French New Wave, Truffaut and Godard’s main actor, did not merely play the lead but became a co-author of the movie. Working in France, Nobuhiro Suwa very carefully tackles the Gaelic poetic tradition, populating his film with ghosts, but he does not renounce his Japanese origin either. Such a combination yields and incredible result: we are witnessing something like live-action anime. It is a movie about death bathed in sunshine, it is also about the joy of joint creative work, the pure and irresponsible pleasure of making a movie, which means the pleasure of living.

According to Brisseau the advances of science do not contradict the idea of the mystic content of the world. His cinema is defined by poetry, stars, eternity. It comes as no surprise that the new movie opens with a quote from Pushkin’s “Demons”.

The author is usually compared with Samuel Beckett. This is the most unusual film of the last Venice Film Festival, shooting of which lasted for nine years and itself resembles the wanderings of the protagonist. Here people and animals, years and countries, memories and visions are mixed up. ”Zama” looks like a feverish dream and has become a final chapter of the cinephile branch of the cinema of zero years.

Milla 17, and Leo not much more, run away to a small town by the English Channel. A love to live, a life to invent, a life to hold on to, always, no matter what. For Valerie Massadian, a former photographer and Nan Goldin’s associate, the reference point has always been a person in the landscape. We find ourselves in the extreme North of France. Nature has always been a source of beauty and of danger as well. Here the light falls in a special way on Milla and Leo’s faces, the sea wind blows around them. There is something foreign and bookish in this couple, at the same time their presence on screen is very powerful, they are not shy of fragility, tenderness or corporeality. “Milla” is a love story as well as a story about survival, overcoming, a lesson in harmony. Moreover, it is an example of joint creative work where the actors and the author act like members of a music band in search of the right rhythm. The tune is “Add It Up” by the great punks “Violent Femmes”. This song plays not only for us, but for the characters as well. It is the director’s present, it gives them strength.

A family drama, fictitious love story, a story of maturing plus some surrealism, is made in claustrophobic square frame format, reminding us of the isolation of a small Swiss town and a strange family of the main character, passionate of Opera. Sarah tries to comprehend the sense of intimacy and affection. None can help her, neither Shakespeare nor Georges Bataille. Sarah plays werewolf, Sarah loses.
CLASSICAL PERIOD
CLASSICAL PERIOD
Producer: TED FENDT
USA / 2018 / 62 MIN. / COLOR / MONO
Cal, Evelyn and Chris live in Philadelphia and spend time talking about arts. Every new book gives rise to a wave of associations and ideas which they generously share with each other. Their joint analysis of “Divine Comedy” unexpectedly propels each of them on a spiritual journey. Ted Fendt continues to shoot on 16 mm and his films have no analogies in American cinema. In “Classical Period” the tone shifts from ironic morality tales to an unexpectedly melancholic narration. He still works with friends who play themselves. They are soul mates and yet they are always separated, always lonely and suddenly they start to realize it. How can modern man relate to the best examples of human beauty and thought? When we talk about arts, whether it is architecture, poetry or music, we may get a chance to express our innermost thoughts. Did Dante believe in free will after all?
NOTES ON AN APPEARANCE
NOTES ON AN APPEARANCE
Producer: RICKY D’AMBROSE
USA / 2018 / 60 MIN. / COLOR / STEREO
On return from Milan to America David suddenly disappeared, leaving behind an obscure archive of letters, postcards and notebooks. Before he disappeared, he studied the work of the mysterious philosopher Stephen Tobs, who talked about the end of politics and history. His friends Todd and Madeleine are wandering along Brookline streets, exhibitions and cafes in search of their missing friend. Ricky D’Ambrose, who was included by Filmmaker magazine in the list of “25 New Faces of Independent Film”, had been working on this film for eight years. He chose a unique way of creation: an up-to-date production about the man of the 21st century and his attitude towards life, presented in the form of a modernist novel of the last century. Each of us consists of minor notes, newspaper clippings, photos, postcards, subway maps, notebooks... How do these notes on an appearance form a hidden, inner life, a story of frustration?
THE GENRE
THE GENRE
Producer: KLIM KOZINSKY
RUSSIA / 2017 / 61 MIN. / COLOR
August 1991. The fascinating VHS tapes of the rehearsals of an independent play set up by a troupe of young Russians during some days of that month. Genre, the show, staged a state of things with a punk vibe, anti-imperialist sentiment, half a dozen firearms pointing every which way, and an iconoclastic spirit. Meanwhile, the radio broadcasts the beginnings of a radical transformation in the Soviet Union, which the group follows with apprehension. General state of alert — they say, in loco, on the images — a coup is in full swing. The new work of Klim Kozinsky represents the incredible penetration into August days. How to remain yourself in times of fundamental changes? How to preserve independence and not to please the hard work of History itself? The option proposed by the director is an intellectual shelter, in no case an escapism, but a paradoxical strategy of active non-participation.
PHOTON
PHOTON
Producer: NORMAN LETO
POLAND / 2017 / 104 MIN. / COLOR / DOLBY 5.1
“Photon” tells the story of the phenomenon of life itself. This unusual, moving film is exceptional in that it shows what we know today about the history of the universe. The first twenty minutes of the film portray the beginnings of space per se, of stars and planets. The story then fluently transitions into the second part titled ‘Life’. The narrator (Andrzej Chyra) explains what is known today about the origins of life (and what remains unknown). How was such complex a creation as a human being formed? On several explicit examples from an average family’s everyday life, we can trace the biological foundations of phenomena such as emotions or nightmares. The final chapter of the film provides an extrapolation on the future of mankind. The incredibly visual narrative ends with a current scientific prediction on the end of the universe. The Polish artist Norman Leto worked on his own relying exclusively on the support of scientific advisors. The shooting took place in Iceland, New York, Chicago, the Southern coast of Spain and his parents’ home in Poland. “Photon” was about 5 years in the making. It is a popular science film as much as a work of art and science fiction. It traces the history of the Universe and of life on Earth, it is a video installation and the visualization of the unimaginable. This is Norman Leto’s second film. Earlier he crated videos for stage productions by Krystian Lupa, a legend of Polish theatre. Incorporating every possible genre, “Photon” is a hand-made version of Terrence Malick’s “Voyage of Time”.

Producer: KIM DAE-HWAN
KOREA / 2017 / 101 MIN. / COLOR / DOLBY
The first step of starting a family, the first step of facing the family you have run away so far. Su-hyeon, a teacher at a private art institute and Ji-young, a contract worker at a small network enterprise have been living together for 6 years. To his surprise, Su-hyeon finds out that Ji-young is late on her period. One evening, the couple heads to the new home of Ji-young’s parents in Incheon. The housewarming party dissolves in ill humor when Ji-young’s mother strongly urges the couple to get married. At the end of a long day, the couple tries to sleep. As Su-hyeon decides to reunite with his family he had been avoiding for sometime, the couple sets off for Samcheok at the far end of the east coast. An elegant social parabola “The First Lap” is a part of a long-term “Digital Project”, invented by the festival in Jeonju. The film is distinguished not by storyline (we have seen a lot of stories of such kind) but by performance. Kim Dae-hwan is an expert of human nature and thus his heroes seem not like strangers, but as close and loved people. The director’s skills allow us to reach the universal level and quickly forget that the action takes place in a distant country, not next door.
